Zest: The wonder of naked fruit

April 20, 2016

If you have a lemon tree in your yard I envy you. If you have an orange and a lemon tree in your yard I really envy you and if you have a lemon, orange and lime tree in your yard…well.

Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe

March 17, 2016

Cacio e pepe is Rome’s answer to what’s for dinner when the cupboards are bare and you are not, I repeat, not going to brave the aisles of the grocery store. If you have pasta, Peccorino and pepper you can make this dish for dinner on those nights when you’d really rather not cook; but, you will be so glad that you did.

Brownie Cake with Chocolate Buttercream

February 21, 2016

Once upon a time I worked in a bakery and baked these fudgy brownies every day. With melted chocolate under my fingernails, we would nibble on the cut away corners and edges all day long. It was a tough job but someone had to do it.

Haddock with Citrus Slaw and Orange Vinaigrette

February 12, 2016

The night this recipe was born I told my husband that we would probably drop a kilo or two after eating this spa-like meal. It’s February and we’re still trying to get a handle on what happened to our waistlines after the crazy holidays.

After all, you’re going to mix it all up before you take the first bite, right?

End of Summer Fried Green Tomatoes

October 29, 2015

My son brought me a big bag of green tomatoes from his garden the other day. What could we possibly do with all these hard round green globes? I say fry them up. Most everyone gets excited about ripe summer tomatoes. But I’m addicted to those end of summer green ones.

September 27, 2015

Oh, enchiladas, carnitas and fish tacos. Where have you been all my life? I love, love, love Mexican food so much that I think in another time, I must have been Hispanic. My name is Carla, is it not? How far removed from Carlita can I be?

Farmer’s Market Salad

September 15, 2015

One of the best things about summer (and there are lots of good things) is our local farmer’s market here in Hudson. We have a small one in my town, right on the green in the middle of the city. On Saturday mornings I find a wide variety of fresh picked produce to experiment with in the coming week.
